Nordic Bioplastics Association kicks off the autumn with this exciting webinar on 23 September, 10–11 am.

The global uncertainty and the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz have given new momentum to the search for fossil-free raw materials from which to make plastic. At the same time, there is a debate about whether the bio-based raw material will be sufficient and whether biodiversity risks declining drastically.

The only thing we are certain of is that society must cease extracting fossil raw materials if our societies are to survive in the long term. Reuse and recycling are all well and good – they can certainly reduce the need for fossil raw material – but making ourselves economically independent of gas and oil requires more than that. Meanwhile, the European Commission has launched its bioeconomy strategy and wants to support similar initiatives to strengthen Europe’s competitiveness.

That is why all innovative ideas and plans are worth listening to. The day will feature two interesting Danish companies working with different strategies to achieve economic independence from fossil raw materials.

Maren Bohl

Co-founder and CTO of Nuterials ApS

PHA and organic waste make a natural pairing when developing new materials for single-use and short-term applications. PHA is a certified biodegradable and compostable polymer, breaking down in soil, freshwater, and marine environments, making it well suited to products designed to eventually biodegrade, such as flower pots, urns, mulch films, and seed bombs. This session looks at why nutshells, in particular, are more than an attractive low-cost filler. Beyond reducing material costs, nutshell particles can act as a processing aid, helping control crystallization behavior, which reduces shrinkage and warping and can shorten cycle times, making PHA easier to handle in standard injection molding equipment. The talk will explore how Nuterials material platform can support manufacturers looking to move toward bio-based solutions without complex process changes.

Maren Bohl

Maren Bohl is co-founder and CTO of Nuterials ApS, a Danish materials company developing JECTO, a bio-based composite made from recycled walnut shells, designed as a drop-in replacement for conventional plastics in injection molding. Maren has a background in pharmaceutical technology, but nowadays her work is at the intersection of material science and industry adoption, helping manufacturers integrate bio-based novel materials into existing production lines without costly retooling. In this session, she will share some of the most promising application areas and prototypes for PHA composites, along with Nuterials’ latest findings and developments, and explain why nutshells are proving to be more than just an attractive filler, but a genuine processing aid that makes PHA easier to work with.

About Nuterials

Nuterials ApS, founded in 2023, is a Danish Startup and materials company on a mission to make bio-based materials easier to adopt at industrial scale. Its flagship material, JECTO, combines certified biodegradable and compostable PHA with upcycled walnut shells, an underused organic waste stream, to create a composite designed as a drop-in replacement for conventional plastics in injection molding. Beyond lowering material costs, the walnut shell content helps control crystallization behavior during processing, reducing shrinkage and warping and enabling shorter cycle times. By turning food industry byproducts into a functional, easy-to-process material, Nuterials aims to help manufacturers move toward bio-based, biodegradable solutions without overhauling their existing production lines.

Michael Poulsen will present Vioneo’s way to make fossil-free plastics, showing how the company combines proven industrial technologies with green methanol and renewable power to produce virgin, drop-in polyethylene and polypropylene without any fossil feedstock. He will explain how this integrated, fully segregated and certified approach eliminates CO₂ emissions from production while delivering the performance and verifiable bio-content (via C14 analysis) that brands and converters request.
